My Journey as a doula began when I found out I was pregnant with my first child. I knew I had options and wanted to research to find my own path. I gave birth so my son naturally and had an amazing, empowering experience. As I saw friends and acquaintances having interventions that they didn’t fully understand something stirred in me. I felt a calling to be part of this process – supporting women through their births with encouragement, information, physical support, and guidance.
Over the years, I’ve discovered that supporting women through childbirth is much less about what I can bring to the birth and much more about allowing the mother tap into her intuition and find the strength inside herself. In the book The Call of the Wild, as Buck (the dog) is discovering his wild instincts, Jack London captures his experience in a way that reminds me of a woman’s journey to motherhood: “He was sounding the deeps of his nature, and of the parts of his nature that were deeper than he, going back into the Womb of Time.” Looking at childbirth as a means of connecting with our ancient selves, transforms it from a medical event into a rite of passage that women, since the dawn of time, have visited. Regardless of a mother’s preferences or they type of birth, I seek to assist mothers as they tap into their strength, find their voice, give birth instinctually, and feel empowered during the process. This journey is different for every woman. In addition to the experience I bring, the emotional and physical support I offer, I help create a safe space for each women to find the path to childbirth that belongs to her.
My services include unlimited telephone or e-mail support throughout your pregnancy, two prenatal appointments, 24-hour on-call availability surrounding your due date, my presence and support during your labor and birth, photography once the baby is born, assistance with initial breastfeeding after the birth, and one post-partum visit. If I am unable to attend your birth due to illness or a conflict with another client in labor, one of my back-up doulas will be able to assist you.
After your baby is born, I step aside and capture images of your new family getting to know each other. The high-resolution electronic images are included in my doula fee and are uploaded into a private, password protected gallery where you may view and download them. Maternity Photography is available for an additional fee.
“Remember this, for it is as true and true gets: Your body is not a lemon. You are not a machine. The Creator is not a careless mechanic. Human female bodies have the same potential to give birth well as aardvarks, lions, rhinoceri, elephants, moose, and water buffalo. Even if it has not been your habit throughout your life so far, I recommend that you learn to think positively about your body.” -Ina May Gaskin
